Step into our visual archive. This gallery brings together rare historical photographs alongside images—as well as videos—from Homecoming celebrations, church services, and community gatherings that capture both the deep roots and the living legacy of Mount Zion Free Will Baptist Church and Johnsontown.
Johnsontown, a historical black community, was founded in 1848 by George W. and Betty Johnson, free African Americans who purchased 12 acres of land.
Photos collected from past Johnsontown Homecomings, and the ones taken today are remarkably similar! Same tent-under-the-trees feeling. Same togetherness. This year's Homecoming congregation gathered in front of Mount Zion for a group photo in that very same spot, almost the same positioning as our elders decades before them.
Infographics highlight historic events at Mount Zion
The connection between Johnsontown and Storer College is rooted in agricultural education and community empowerment for Black Americans in Jefferson County, West Virginia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries
